    Weigh-in, Binges and Shame

As I mentioned last week, I turned sixty on the first of this month and that led to a great deal of introspection. Ugh! Frankly, I’d rather just stumble along without too much thought about past screw ups and future danger zones, but at least a couple of times a year it’s probably wise to look a little closer at where I’m at emotionally. I’ve struggled with binge eating disorder my whole life and, while I’m in a good place right now, I always have an underlying fear of flare ups and falling down that rabbit hole of self-loathing and shame.  Normal Behavior I think most people would enjoy a…

    May 2019 Reading List

May 2019 was a great month for reading at the Sweet Orange Cottage. I’ve enjoyed a nice mix of nonfiction, fiction, heavy, light, ebooks and audiobooks. I checked all of these books out through my local library on Overdrive. Should you wish to purchase these titles I have linked to Amazon. As an Amazon Associate I earn a small commission at no additional cost to you from qualifying purchases. Let’s dig in! Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town by Jon Krakauer * I love Krauer for his well-researched and compelling non-fiction writing. Into Thin Air is high on my list of favorites. I listened to this…

    Some Plateaus are Victories

The Results This week I stuck to my to my “develop strong habits” plan and while no actual weight was lost, I’m feeling positive. It’s my birthday today and there was a little celebrating last night with a couple of glasses of wine, half of a delicious roll with butter, a shrimp taco and half a glorious(and large) ice cream sundae. I refuse to feel bad about any of it. A person doesn’t turn 60 every day and Lord, some solace was necessary! Staying the same this week feels a bit like a win. Not exciting for blog readers but fine by me. Sticking to the Plan The strategy to…

    My Goal Problem

So…… things went off the rails fairly quickly this week. I’ve gained 2 pounds back and have been experiencing, what I call, disordered eating. I started off carefully following the plan I’d layed out but when I had a little bump up in weight, I decided to be strict with myself and that’s when things went wrong. I skipped some meals and then ended the week with what I’d call a “mini-binge.” I went to the movies by myself yesterday and ate a small popcorn and an entire package of red licorice. When I came out, I was disgusted with myself and ready to throw in the towel. It was…

    May 18, 2019 Weigh In

I had a two pound loss this week. I stuck to the plan I made last week by tracking my calories and walking every day. I had committed to exercise 5 of 7 days, but I find it’s easier to stay on track if I just do it every day. There’s no room to backslide that way. My food choices were very boring. I have an Egg Beater breakfast with homemade salsa every single morning and a Trader Joe’s salad for lunch on the days I’m working. I’ve been eating Lean Cuisine for dinner which I realise probably isn’t the best choice nutritionally. I’m okay with that for now, since…

    Simple Plant Hanger Tutorial

I created this simple, cloth plant hanger in under a hour. It’s a great way to use up leftover fabric scraps and add a bit of a fresh touch for summer. Here’s what you need: 1 Yard of non-stretch cloth cut into four 3 inch wide strips 1 Brass Ring Matching thread Sewing machine Step 1. Sew together 2 strips width wise creating a 72 inch strip. Repeat for 2nd strap. Step 2. Fold strap in half, right sides together and sew together long wise with ½ inch seam. Repeat with 2nd strap. Step 3. Turn each strap right side out. (I use the safety pin method) Step 4 Cross the…

    May 11, 2019 Weigh In

Ah, the best laid plans! I had what I consider a good week, but haven’t seen the results I’d like. I didn’t binge or really even over-eat, but sadly, made very little progress. I’ve lost 5 ounces.  I’m eating my regular large Egg Beaters breakfast, a Reduced Guilt Chinese chicken salad from Trader Joe’s for lunch and a Lean Cuisine for dinner. I like these things, so the food choices haven’t been painful. I find that a packaged meal is easy for me and helps me with portion control. I have been snacking on some pork rinds in the afternoon, drinking 2 glasses of Rose’ and eating 1 or 2…

    Getting Started(Again)

One of my goals for Sweet Orange Cottage is to use this space to explore issues I have about my weight. I think it’s unpopular these days to focus on weight loss as a specific goal. We should be working to love our bodies as they are. Intuitive eating, body acceptance and fat pride are things I strive for, but I’m just not there. I haven’t been able to let go of my life long hope(goal? wish?) to be thinner. I love seeing large women out and about doing all the things I felt I never could: wearing bikinis, showing skin, playing sports, eating what they like and just in…

    About Me

Welcome to the Sweet Orange Cottage, my blog about life in a 1950’s California bungalow. I love thrifty style, all things sewing, some knitting, Disney-bounding, any excuse to dress up, a bit of gardening, serious holiday decorating, vintage fashion, slow, easy travel and everything kitsch. I struggle with “weighty” issues and strive for body acceptance but rarely achieve it. I’m an emerging feminist trying to understand what it means to be a woman in her fifties. I’m ready to create the life I’ve always imagined was possible. Won’t you come along for the journey?
